Elizabeth City is truly "One of the Best Small Towns" in America. It has something to appeal to you...regardless of age. You are likely to discover some special event going on in the city or immediate area during any month of the year including Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration, Founder's Day at Elizabeth City State University, The TarHeel Century Bike Ride, The Annual Potato Festival, Craft Fairs, Parades, and of course, Harbor Nights from June through September.
This area was explored in 1585 making it one of the earliest settlements in North America and by the late 1600s it was a successful settlement. Its importance increased with the construction of the Dismal Swamp Canal begun in 1794 and still operating as part of the Inter-coastal Waterway. Elizabeth City residents have played important roles in the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Much of our heritage comes alive as you walk or drive to the many attractions in our area. History, the Arts, Boating, Canoeing, Science/Invention, Biking and Southern Hospitality abound in Elizabeth City.
